Once, I was told -
The spirits of the land
communicate through
fire's shifting embers.

I gazed at my fire
with its dancing embers
and I waited.
The shapes in the embers turned combative
as I gazed.
They fought;
one side fleeing
from the other's relentless attacks.
The fleeing shapes
contorted
twisted
curling within themselves.

At one point
my
self
was scattered
like ash and smoke
floating
in the wind.

The embers kept dancing
but together now:
Intertwining like roots
like the trees growing
the forests rebuilding
after the fire.

In my landscape
out of the ashes
comes new life -
hope.
