To achieve the kind of sound art piece I had in mind, I searched{ AN } Eel's discography for ambient tracks using a reduced number of instruments and composed mostly from high-pitched sounds. I made a sound collage from the two tracks that fit these aesthetic criteria: "Pickled Primate Parts" and "Glowing Buddha". In each of the pieces, the sung passages were removed, because the human voice is not very suitable for the kind of effects with which I wanted to manipulate the sounds.

The "original track" thus obtained was first transferred to a MIDI file via a website, then this MIDI file was in turn transferred to WAV. All the sounds of the original track are thus transposed into digital piano notes corresponding to their pitch. By superimposing the two tracks (sound collage and digital piano), they are perfectly synchronized. However, only the last seconds of the piano track were kept in the final mix.

Seven tracks were made from the original, each lower in pitch than the last by an interval of 12 semitones. The eight tracks were mixed together, using fades for each of them. The pitch of some very short passages has been changed by a semitone (higher or lower). Finally, two clicks were cut.

Pour réaliser le genre de pièce d’art sonore que j’avais en tête, j’ai cherché dans la discographie de { AN } Eel des pistes ambiantes utilisant un nombre réduits d’instruments et composées principalement à partir de sons aigus. J’ai réalisé un collage sonore à partir des deux pistes qui correspondaient à ces critères esthétiques, soit « Pickled Primate Parts » et « Glowing Buddha ». Dans chacune des pièces, les passages chantés ont été enlevés, car la voix humaine ne convient pas tellement au genre d’effets avec lesquels je voulait manipuler les sons.

La « piste originale » ainsi obtenue a d’abord été transférée en fichier MIDI via un site internet, puis ce fichier MIDI est à son tour transféré en WAV. Tous les sons de la piste d’origine sont ainsi transposés en notes de piano numérique correspondant à leur hauteur. En superposant les deux pistes (collage et piano numérique), celles-ci sont parfaitement synchronisées. Toutefois, seules les dernières secondes de la piste de piano ont été conservées dans le mix final.

Sept pistes ont été réalisées à partir de l’original, chacune étant plus grave que la précédente à raison d’un intervalle de 12 demi-tons. Les huit pistes ont été mixées ensemble, en utilisant des fondus pour chacune d’entre elles. La hauteur de certains très courts passages a été modifié d’un demi-ton (plus aigu ou plus grave). Enfin, deux clics ont été coupés.
